Nurses Come and Go, But None for Me
Genre:
Nurses Come and Go, But None For Me is a two-part film by Ed Atkins. The first part features a performative reading of his father Philip’s cancer diary, Sick Notes, written in the six months before his death in 2009. The second reenacts a game Atkins plays with his daughter, The Ambulance Game, in which she pretends to be ill and receives fantastical treatments. The diary is a candid, often funny and painful document of decline—capturing not only illness but also longing, bureaucracy, love, and the social life of hospitals. In the film, Toby Jones reads it to a group of young people before collapsing and receiving surreal care from Saskia Reeves. Originally private, both the diary and the game imagined an audience. The film makes that fantasy real, framing them as performances. Where the diary sought to reclaim life through writing, the game enacts control through play—each a rehearsal for the unimaginable.
